1.  Basic List of Materials

  • Drawing paper
  • Pencil
  • Sharpener
  • Eraser
  • Coloured pencils or Crayons
  • Stable base of support/ Drawing board

2. A step-by-step guide to Draw an Owl

Step 1: Draw outline of an Owl

First, take your drawing sheet and a pencil and draw a vertical long oval shape in the centre of the sheet. After making this, you need to draw one more oval but smaller than the previous at the top end of the oval. This small oval will be the owl’s head.

The circle should cover the ¼ of the oval. You can refer to the image if you are having any confusion.

Step 2: Make the structure more clearer

Now it’s time to erase the lines which are passing through the small oval shape that is the face of an owl.

You can refer to the picture.

Step 3: Make eyes and feet

To draw eyes, simply make two big circles spaced a small distance apart. You can use a bottle cap as a guide to help you achieve the right size and shape.

To draw feet, at the bottom, first we draw an outline of the feet by making equal size rectangles on both the sides. Now make these lines of the rectangle, a little curved.

Step 4: Make eyebrows, nose and more clearer feet

To make the eyebrows, draw straight lines above the eyes, making sure that the line is moving out of the circle. For the nose, draw a vertical straight line between the two eyes.

Now, to make claws, make three C shapes in continuity in the feet. You can also refer to the picture.

Step 5: Draw wings, eyebrows, nose and feet

Now, let’s make the eyebrow better, from the starting point of the line which you did in the previous step, draw another line from the same point in a little outward direction and then join the two ends of the line.

To make your nose better, from the starting point of a straight line make two slant lines in both directions, and join the two ends by making a straight line and erasing the line in the centre.

Now, to make your feet look neat, the C shape that shares the same curve from there draw straight lines.

To draw wings, from the end of the face draw a long C shape to the body of an owl.

Step 5: Draw wings, eyebrows, nose and feet

Now, our final step is to add colours to the drawing. Add dark or light brown colour to the face and arms. For the lower body, you can go for a mustard colour. And for feet and eyebrows, go for a dark brown colour.

Final Touches

Erase all the extra lines which you made during the drawing. Outline your drawing using colours to make it look more beautiful. You can also add a border to your drawing to make it look more clean. Make the owl eyes more attractive by putting glitter to it.

Additionally, what you can do

  • You can use a black sketch pen after you have completed your drawing using a pencil. By doing this, your drawing will look more attractive.
  • You can go for colour shading to make your drawing look more beautiful.
  • You can also make some trees around the owl.
  • You can also show a cage in which an owl is kept.
  • You can create a scene of a zoo, by making more animals or a bird.

Conclusion

Good job, artists! You have learned how to make an owl in 6 easy steps. Practise regularly to make an owl perfect. It’s okay if you are not making an owl on your first attempt. Don’t lose hope, you can make it better if you practise.
